Fujian Flavors Make Their Debut at UNESCO Headquarters
When these unique Fuzhou dishes such as Fried Shrimp and Crab Meatballs, Fried Cod Fish with Lychees, and Fuzhou Braised Duck with Red Yeast Sauce were served at the headquarters of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in Paris, they received unanimous praise from the guests.
On April 15, the State Council Information Office of China, UNESCO, and China’s National Commission for UNESCO co-hosted the International Symposium on the Concept of Intercultural Exchanges and Mutual Learning among Civilizations at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris. The China Cuisine Association was invited to assist in organizing the “Chinese Culture · Elegant Gathering” reception held concurrently with the symposium.
To this end, the China Cuisine Association brought together renowned chefs from Fuzhou, Quanzhou, Chaozhou, Guilin, Taiyuan, Beijing, and other cities. Focusing on Fujian cuisine, one of the most representative of China’s eight major cuisines, they created a culinary feast that blended traditional techniques with contemporary creativity. Through the refined techniques and rich flavors of Fujian cuisine, the event highlighted the enduring charm of Chinese culture.
To ensure the success of the culinary tasting event, the China Cuisine Association formally wrote to the city of Fuzhou, requesting the participation of top Fujian cuisine chefs. Fuzhou selected three chefs, all recognized as the Fujian Cuisine Master, to bring four classic Fuzhou dishes to Paris: Fried Shrimp and Crab Meatballs, Fried Cod Fish with Lychees, Sliced Boiled Lamb, and Fuzhou Braised Duck with Red Yeast Sauce. These signature dishes received high praise from the guests at the event.
In 2023, Fuzhou introduced the Work Plan for Fuzhou’s Bid for “City of Gastronomy,” highlighting active participation in events organized by UNESCO, national ministries and commissions, and professional associations. The local catering industry has responded enthusiastically by creating renowned Fujian cuisine brands, both domestically and internationally, while promoting Fuzhou cuisine as the heart of Fujian’s culinary heritage on the global stage. This initiative contributes to Fuzhou’s bid for “City of Gastronomy” and aims to establish it as an international consumption center city. (Reporter: Jiang Hai)
