Fuzhou: Joyful Cooking Showcases the Vibrant Lives of Seniors

On November 28, the air was filled with the aroma of delicious food at the culinary teaching practice base of Fuzhou Senior-Citizen University, where a unique event, “A Bite of the Senior-Citizen University,” was held. Organized by the Fuzhou Senior-Citizen University and the Xiamen International Bank Fuzhou Branch, the event aimed to showcase the learning achievements and spirit of the elderly students.

As the reporter walked into the culinary teaching practice base, she saw a teacher skillfully flipping a wok with his right hand while stirring with his left, preparing the signature Fujian dish, Stir-fried Pork Liver. Meanwhile, more than 20 volunteers from the Senior-Citizen University and cooking class students were each focused on their tasks. Some were prepping ingredients, while others were plating and serving dishes. Everything was running smoothly and efficiently.

After a morning of hard work, more than a dozen dishes were ready, each bursting with color, aroma, and flavor. Li Haini, a volunteer from Fuzhou Senior-Citizen University, proudly picked up her phone to record a video of the spread, eager to share it with her daughter studying abroad. She shared that she had taken three terms of cooking classes and learned nearly 50 dishes. “Now I’ve got the hang of it all - pan-frying, stir-frying, boiling, deep-frying, steaming, braising, stewing - you name it,” she said with a smile.

According to the information, Fuzhou Senior-Citizen University began offering cooking classes in 1987. This year, the program has expanded to include 11 courses, featuring Fujian cuisine, vegetarian cooking, medicinal meals, and both Chinese and Western-style pastries.
