Recently, Fuzhou has made new progress in its bid for “City of Gastronomy.” The solicitation campaign for the slogan, organized by the Fuzhou Municipal Bureau of Commerce, was successfully concluded. After extensive submissions from citizens, public participation in the selection process, and expert reviews, “Millennium-old Fujian Cuisine for Global Sharing” stood out and was chosen as the official slogan for Fuzhou’s bid for “City of Gastronomy.” Bearing the essence and charm of Fuzhou’s culinary culture, it will be submitted to UNESCO for consideration.

Over 10,000 slogan submissions have been received

Since Fuzhou launched the global campaign to collect slogans for its bid for “City of Gastronomy” in November 2024, the campaign has received an enthusiastic response from a large number of applicants. A total of over 10,000 slogan submissions have been received across various channels.

The solicitation campaign not only attracted a large number of Fuzhou locals, but also harvested submissions from across the country, including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangdong, Jiangsu, Shandong, and other regions. Applicants expressed their understanding of Fuzhou’s culinary culture from various perspectives.

Among the numerous submissions, many excellent works with unique creativity and far-reaching implications emerged. For example, the submission “Enjoy Blessings and Flavors in Fuzhou” skillfully uses the implication of the name Fuzhou, showing the profound characteristics of Fuzhou, while vividly indicating Fuzhou’s diverse food offerings, particularly its famous soup-based dishes.

The submission “Fuzhou Flavor, World Taste” is concise and catchy, which not only embodies the image of Fuzhou cuisine as a representative of Fujian cuisine, but also conveys the cultural confidence that Fuzhou cuisine is worthy of world taste.

The submission “Mountains as Plates, Seas as Bowls, World’s Delicacies Gathered in Fuzhou” seamlessly combines Fuzhou’s geographical advantages of being surrounded by mountains and seas with its abundant culinary resources, reflecting the city’s inclusive and diverse food culture.

The submission “Fuzhou’s Blessings for All, Flavors Recall” not only conveys Fuzhou’s vision of spreading its culinary delights and blessings worldwide but also highlights the long history and cultural heritage of Fuzhou cuisine.

Multiple submissions have been selected as promotional slogans for Fuzhou cuisine

This solicitation campaign comprised multiple links, including public selection and expert reviews.

Currently, “Millennium-old Fujian Cuisine for Global Sharing” has been selected as the official slogan for Fuzhou’s bid for “City of Gastronomy” and will be submitted to UNESCO for consideration.

In addition, several other slogans have been selected to promote Fuzhou cuisine and help Fuzhou build its reputation as a signature city of Fujian cuisine. These slogans include: “Fuzhou Cuisine, A Fusion of Mountain and Sea Delicacies,” “Fuzhou Cuisine, A Flavor of Happiness,” “Global Sharing of Fuzhou Cuisine,” “A City of Vibrant Life, A Taste of Millennium-Old Fujian,” and “Fuzhou, A City of Culinary Delights.”

As one of the expert judges for this solicitation campaign, Huang Lyubing, the President of Fuzhou Catering and Cuisine Industry Association, stated, “The slogan should be precise, structurally harmonious, and vividly reflect the image of Fuzhou as a city of gastronomy. It should be simple, concise, catchy, and unique, highlighting the city’s historical and cultural heritage, humanistic spirit, folk customs, and the essence of its culinary culture.”

Boost the prosperity and development of the Fujian cuisine industry

Fuzhou cuisine has gained global recognition, with its rich culinary tradition passed down through generations. Fujian cuisine, one of China’s eight major cuisines, traces its roots to the Eight Min region (Fujian Province). It has evolved through the fusion of ancient Minyue culture and Central Plains civilization, with Fuzhou cuisine standing as its primary representative. Known for its mastery in preparing both mountain and sea delicacies, Fujian cuisine combines a wide range of cooking techniques such as stir-frying, quick-frying, sauteing, deep-frying, braising, simmering, poaching, and quick-boiling. It strikes a perfect balance of color, aroma, flavor, presentation, and texture, offering fresh, delicate, and subtle flavors. Distinct in its style, Fujian cuisine has earned international recognition for its unique appeal.

In June 2022, Fuzhou launched its bid for the UNESCO Creative Cities Network – “Cities of Gastronomy.” This initiative aims to promote the global exchange of Fujian cuisine while creating new opportunities for the high-quality development of Fuzhou’s catering industry. In recent years, Fuzhou’s catering industry has shown a positive trend of high-end, branded, and international growth.

“The orderly advancement of Fuzhou’s bid for ‘City of Gastronomy’ will help preserve and pass on the culinary skills and culture of Fujian cuisine. It will also drive the high-quality development of the Fujian catering industry, while continuously enhancing Fuzhou’s international reputation, deepening international exchanges and cooperation, and further strengthening its cultural soft power,” said Huang Lyubing.
